With a case of Chateau Latour
1990 going for more than £3,000 at auction last month, top
flight Bordeaux has long been out of the reach of most wine buyers. And
astronomical prices at the top end mean a degree of overpricing
throughout, with the result that the whole region has a reputation for
poor value for money. (icnetwork)
In the greater
span of things it's a question that's hardly in the same league as why
does bread always land butter-side down, or should we trust belligerent
world leaders whose eyes are too close together? But it's still one of
the most enduring enigmas that has tasked the minds of scholars: what
exactly are you supposed to drink with a curry? (scotsman)
A generation ago, many
Americans viewed wine as the purview of pompous white guys in tuxedos
sipping claret from crystal glasses. The only ethnic market for wine
was Italian immigrants. African Americans and Hispanics were invisible
to the wine world. Today the wine landscape is a lot more colorful. Two
wonderful young wineries that reflect this new multicultural diversity
are Vision Cellars and Ceja Vineyards. (hispanicbusiness)

SHANGHAI-Tea for two, wine for
1 billion? Red
wine is making a comeback in the Middle Kingdom. Contrary to popular belief, the
Chinese have long had a taste for wine, quaffing it as far back as the
days of the Tang dynasty (618-906). Now that the country is enjoying brisk economic
growth, red wine is flowing along with the cash-especially in coastal
regions. (asahi)
Wine producers in Bordeaux are
starting to think the unthinkable as they try to halt a plunge in sales
of one of the world's most prestigious tipples. Growers and sellers are
considering tearing up some vineyards, changing their ways to adapt to
markets and consumer tastes and improving the quality of their product.
The measures were
put forward at a closed meeting over the past few days of 300
professionals in Bordeaux, the city synonymous with fine wine. (smh)
Surrounded by the vines of

winemakers. Nestled in a small green valley and restored with talent by
architect Marielle Meli (Pascal's wife), La Maison des Vignes ("House
in the Vines"), with its large fireplaces, oak beams, four personalized
bedrooms and old books, is totally elegant, while retaining a feeling
of true authenticity. A Week in the Bordeaux Wine Country with Bujan's

Carmenere, a wine grape brought
from Bordeaux, France, to Chile in the late 19th century, produces a
medium- to full-bodied varietal that is often rich, round and softly
textured. The
wines tasted for today show spice, juicy red fruit -- cherry, raspberry
plum and cranberry -- with some spice, blackberry, coffee and earth.
Chocolate is evident in some, while various levels of oak and tannins
contribute texture. (sfgate)
